The trip

The trip was organised by Geoff, and we had fourteen people in our party, including four non-divers.

These pictures show all the divers on the boat coming back from the Dunraven dive, a social outing for some of us to a Nubian village via a 45 minute camel ride, and the penultimate dinner at the hotel.

Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm as seen from our dive boat. The normally chaotic and busy dockside is quiet during our lunchtime return for additional cyclinders. Mornings and evenings are considerably diferent!
The main promenade. Our fifteen minute walk from the dive boat to the hotel was along this promenade.

All along this promenade you have hotels, dive shops and restaurants along the left, and the beach on the right.

The Hotel

For the trip we were staying in the Sonesta Club hotel.

The hotel itself is extremely nice in a courtyard design with a pool and poolside bar in the centre.

The 271 rooms are furnished in Nubian-style carved furniture.

The hotel is a fifteen minute walk from the centre of Sharm-El-Sheikh

The hotel has two restaurants (Nubian and poolside), a disco and a bar.

The hotel also sports a health club and a shuttle bus service to the beach (part of the sister Sonesta Beach hotel complex). The two pools in the complex have excellent sun bathing facilities and a poolside bar serving bar snacks all day.

A view from the top of one of the buildings looking into the courtyard.

Red Sea Diving College

The trip was arrange through the Red Sea Diving College.

They provided any equipment we needed to hire (basically just weights), a boat and two divemasters called Margaret Johnston and David Lord.

Margaret & David led several of our dives and were responsible for selecting the dive sites, setting out a dive plan giving us an overview of the site and leading some of the dives.

On the boat...

For the first four days of the trip we were based on the Sea Star 3 (aka Sea Star Alex). For the final day on the Thistlegorm we were based on the Dream 3 a larger boat to allow us to do the long trip (four hours each way) a little faster.

Aboard Sea Star 3:

In the water...

These pictures were taken with an extremely simple underwater camera rated to 20M (it went deeper!).

The pictures are from Ras Um Sidd, Ras Mohamed, The Temple and the Dunraven sites.
