This annual club trip was organised by Mick. We had twenty-seven divers in our party.

Malta is our first organised dive trip of the season, and ususally contains a number of trainee divers. This year seven of the nine trainees on the trip returned as Sports Divers.

Our base for the week was provided by Maltaqua in St. Pauls Bay. Maltaqua have a dive shop, dive guides, an appartment building, and run the International Diver College. We used the appartment building, and hired basic equipment such as tanks and weights. Since this was the club's eleventh consecutive trip we were hardly in need of dive guides!

The appartment building is designed specifially for divers with a kit room in the basement for cleaning kit and lockers for each appartment. The street the apartment block is on has several bars, restaurants and a small shop.

Our transport for the week was a number of jeeps.

Slugs Bay

Slubs Bay was our first dive site for the week. The dive site itself is nowhere near as interesting as the 'drive' down the hill to get to the pier.

As can be seen in the photograph the weather was marginal, so the dive consisted of Club Diver drills in the lee of the pier.

Anchor Bay

Anchor Bay is the location used by the 1980 Popeye film starring Robin Williams. As a result divers benefit from a nice location, and a concrete pier to jump from.

The inner bay is used for training dives as it has a maximum depth of 13m. A dive to the windward side of the pier leads you to a cave.

As Anchor Bay is a tourist destination there is a bar/restaurant over at the Popeye village.

Marfa Point

Marfa is probably the most popular dive site in Malta. Marfa is on the northern tip of the island just beside the Gozo ferry terminal.

Marfa offers a very wide range of dives with three caves, a lifesize statue of the Virgin (at 17m) and the wreck of the tugboat Rozi.

In common with Anchor Bay there is a bar/cafe where you can get lunch.

Ghar Lapsi

Ghar Lapsi is on the south west corner of the island some 45 minutes drive from St. Pauls Bay. Ghar Lapsi is on top of a steep hill with a small harbour below.

Entry is via a shallow pool through a small cave to the open sea. Several rare species of fish are known to inhabit the area.

Ghar Lapsi has a small hotel with a cafe where you can get lunch.

Comino by boat

Our penultimate days diving was on a boat around the blue caves off the island of Comino.

We did two dives, one at Lantern Point, and one in the Comino Caves. Lantern point has a spectacular funnel with two entrances.
